YES is proud to support several music education projects in Yamhill County. Music plays an invaluable role in the development of young minds. Here’s one parents’s words describing her child’s experience with JOY:
“I am amazed and delighted at the discipline and musicianship I see being developed in my student because of her participation in the JOY program. I love the pride she has in a job well done and how she is learning to work with others in something that is bigger than herself. Thank you YES for the opportunities you are giving Edwards students.”
JOY provides violin instruction in partnership with elementary school and its music teachers during the school day. This program launched in 2017 and is currently offered at the kindergarten and first grade level at Edwards Elementary in Newberg, Oregon.
JOY seeks to impact students in their most formative years on multiple fronts: removing social, economic and cultural barriers to specialized music education; increasing executive function and academic performance; and creating stronger family, peer-to-peer, community and school engagement. Students are eligible regardless of racial, cultural and economic diversity.
The JOY music program is based on the ‘El Sistema” method of music education that brings violin training and life skills to every child. JOY is a collaboration of YES, Newberg Public Schools, George Fox University and the Chehalem Cultural Center.
JOY music teachers are experienced performing artists as well as highly qualified classroom educators. Our instrumental specialists build into their students a love of music and a commitment to sharing that JOY with the community.
Two years of violin instruction during music education class for kindergarten and first graders teaches both music and life skills, giving students the pride of achievement and preparing them for pursuing their music in the second through fifth grade after school program. YES and JOY are raising funds to implement the after-school program in the 2019-2020 school year.
